“Second Spring”
“Second Spring” is the third most important period in woman’s life following the Heavenly water and Childbirth. According to Nei Jing book, the woman’s life evolves in 7 year cycles. So age 14 is marked by the Heavenly flow, or also known as first period. The next stage of development encompasses age 21 to 28 where female reach their developmental peak. 35 years of age is when things start to slow down and production of Blood and Qi decreases. Spleen in Chinese medicine governs muscles and we start to notice how they begin to weaken. At age 49 the Penetrating vessel (which carries Blood to the Uterus) diminish .
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the stage in a woman’s life following the cessation of her period is called “Second Spring”. It represents a period where there is renewal of energy and also opportunities.
We are used to referring to that transition in West as Menopause.
The truth is that this transition takes place over cycles of 2 to 5 years before the complete cessation of the period.
This is the body’s natural way to slow down and bring new balance to the next years. Women are no longer loosing blood every month so this energy can be used to do whatever else we want.
In the West we have various disbalances that are accompanying this transition and are mainly address with hormonal therapy.
Traditional Chinese Medicine can help bring balance to the mind, body, emotions and hormones to the female body. We use Acupuncture in a gentle way to restore the balance that the body needs so it doesn’t experience uncomfortable symptoms such as anxiety, palpitations, anger outbursts, hot flashes, loss of apetite, loss of sexual drive, etc.
Menopause is a transition, not a disease and should be harmonized and balanced instead of dreaded.
Some of the mail symptoms are:
Hot flashes
Night sweats
Weight gain and slowed metabolism
Thinning hair and dry skin
Irregular periods
Vaginal dryness
Sleep problems
Mood changes
